The History and a Summary
FROM THE LAKELAND TIMES
SEPTEMBER 1974

The Plantation Supper Club, which burned to the ground last Thursday,Sept 12, originally opened in the hey day of gambling in the north. The grand opening ad in the Lakeland Times of 1 July 1938, proclaimed "For Fun-For Profit-Visit The Plantation." Slot machines lined the walls of the main dining room, crap tables and horse betting were in the rear.
The Saturday, July 2, 1938 opening of the Plantation was short lived. Early in the morning of July 5, two gunmen shot and killed the night watchman, took eight slot machines believed to have been loaded with July 4th. holiday play, and an undetermined amount of cash from the register.
This incident closed the Plantation until July 1939, when a toned down ad in the Lakeland Times proclaimed the supper club as a "meeting place for you and your friends" with a cocktail lounge and the same "Golden Brown Fried Chicken". Continuous entertainment was still offered and the slot machines were still around.

An Introduction

We would like to take a few moments to acquaint you with the the Lakeland area.
The Minocqua-Woodruff-Arbor Vitae community has shown tremendous growth during the past decade. A high percentage of this growth is due to the pre planning of retirement by up scale baby boomers. Most of the new home construction is high end.
Accessibility is another reason for the increase in business and residential construction. Four lane highways connect the north woods to the major population centers of Chicago (350 mi), Milwaukee (260 mi), Minneapolis (200mi ) making it attractive for people within a 400 mi radius.
The Minocqua-Woodruff-Arbor Vitae school system is first class with a new addition to the high school and the new Arbor Vitae -Woodruff grade school
There is a local airport to accommodate small aircraft to include corporate jets. Rhinelander 25 mi to the southeast has an airport with daily regional airline flights.
Gaming is a popular attraction at Lake Of The Torches casino located 10 mi to the west in Lac Du Flambeau.
The counties of Vilas and Oneida have the highest concentration of lakes in the United States, plus innumerable rivers, streams, ponds and creeks. Water activities are therefore the number one draw for the area. Fishing, canoeing, water sking, pwc, sailing, scuba diving ect.
Watching wildlife, eagles, osprey, bears, hawks, beaver, otters, deer and the many migratory and permanent song birds is a top priority for many visitors Nothing is quite like the haunting call of a Loon at sunset on a north woods lake.
In the so called "off season" an incredible transformation takes place as the lakes freeze over and deep clean snow accumulates. This brings tens of thousands of winter recreational enthusiasts. Nordic skiing is very popular here with many marked and groomed trails with Winter Park located 8 mi West of Minocqua. Winter Park has kilometers of groomed trails from beginner to expert with equipment and professional instruction available to make for an enjoyable experience.
One hour to the North in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are several alpine ski areas for the down hill crowd.
Snowmobiling is the top attraction in the winter. Note: the restaurant is located on the trail. Because of the efforts of the various volunteer snow mobile clubs I. E. the Arbor Vitae -Woodruff Cross Country Cruisers, the Lake Tomahawk New-Tom Sno Fleas, the Round Lake area Forest Riders, the St Germain Bo-Boens, the Sayner Barnstormers, the Eagle River SnoEagles and many other clubs and businesses this region is consistently voted by snowmobiliers the best snowmobile destination in the country.
The natural beauty of the North woods sells itself. But it is also the people, their friendliness, fairness, volunteerism and healthy outlook on life that genuinely impresses all the people who come to visit us.
In conclusion :a wonderful place to work, grow and live in tranquility and peace.
